Relocation of the ADF and RAD ALT Antennas on Airbus BK 117

For a customer SPAES replaced an ADF antenna from the lower front fairing to the tail boom. The ADF antenna and the preinstalled RAD ALT antennas had to be readjusted together on a console.

Due to the installation of a Nightscanner® – a search and landing light – in the lower fairing the preinstalled ADF antenna need a new mounting place. After investigating of the possibilities, the ADF antenna was moved from the lower fairing to the tail boom. The optimal position was located between the two RAD ALT antennas.
„It had to be ensured that the specified distance between the ADF antenna and the RAD ALT antennas was maintained exactly, so that they do not interfere with each other in the frequency ranges“ says Nikolas Kares, Head of Part 21G Production Organisation of SPAES.
The development of the console as well as the preparation of the installation and production documents were carried out at SPAES own Part 21J Design Organisation. In close contact with the helicopter manufacturer, the design and certification of the antenna console was carried out.
For installation of the ADF antenna the new wiring was routed to the new antenna position. The mounting bracket were manufactured and assembled according to manufacturing specifications at the customer’s own Part 145 maintenance Organisation.
After completion of the installation and the approval documents a Minor Change was issued by SPAES.
The change is for the Airbus BK 117 A-1, A-3, A-4, B-1, B-2, C-1, C-2, D-2 available.
